Hanging Star Ornament

Let’s knit a hanging start ornament! You can make it with five or six points, and even knit it in multiple colors. Each one just takes an hour or two to make–pop in your favorite holiday movie and make some for your friends and family. I think it would be so cute to add a photo of a beloved family member or pet to the center of the star or add a little sparkle by attaching sequins or other embellishments.

Supplies
– 20 (24 yds) [18.5 (22) m] of worsted weight yarn
– US 5 [3.75 mm] knitting needles or size needed to obtain gauge
– Tapestry Needle
– Small Scissors
– Locking stitch marker
– Blocking Supplies

Gauge 5 sts and 9 rows = 1” [2.5 cm] in garter st

Gauge is not critical for this pattern; however, a different gauge will affect size of star and amount of yarn used.

Abbreviations
BO: Bind Off
CO: Cast On
k: knit
k2tog: knit two stitches together
m1: make one by casting on one st using the backwards loop method
rep: repeat
RS: Right Side
sl: slip stitch purlwise
st(s): stitch(es)
WS: Wrong Side
wyif: with yarn in front

Instructions
Using the Long Tail Cast On, CO 11 sts.

Row 1 (WS): Knit all sts.
Row 2 (RS): Sl1 wyif, k1, m1, k6, k2tog, k1.

Rep Rows 1 & 2 another 5 times.
Rep Row 1 once more.

BO 8 sts (2 sts remain on left needle), k2tog, BO 1 st (1 st remains on right needle).

*With RS-facing, pick up and knit 10 sts evenly along left edge of piece—11 sts.

Work Rows 1 & 2 six times.
Work Row 1 once more.
BO 8 sts (2 sts remain on left needle), k2tog, BO 1 st (1 st remains on right needle).*

Rep from * to * another 3 times for 5-point star (4 times for 6-point star).

Trim yarn, leaving approximately 8” [20.5 cm] tail. Using tapestry needle, hold RS-together and whip stitch CO and BO edges together. Weave in any remaining ends. If desired, block lightly.

Attach hanging loop of yarn, ribbon, or other cording to one point of the star. Make several and turn it into a pretty garland!

For the two-color striped stars, follow the same pattern as above. Change colors on Right Side Rows by slipping the first stitch purlwise with the yarn in front, moving the yarn to the back, and then working the remainder of the row with the new color. When binding off the stitches for each star point, alternate each color when knitting the stitches in the bind off.
