Have you been curious about knitting, but don’t know where to start? This 14-Day Learn to Knit series will help you begin your knitting journey, teaching you the basics and guiding you through your first knitting project. The first lessons cover knitting supplies and terminology. From there, the lessons move on to teach you how to cast on, knit, purl, and bind off. It’s going to be a fun-filled 14 days of learning to knit. Let’s find joy in our stitches. Be sure to save or bookmark this page to access your daily instructions.

I want to learn how to knit.
I want to learn how to knit. I crochet.
What website do you want me to enter???
Have been looking for a project to share with my sister who also does not knit. Will send this invite over to her and then we can both work together although I’m in Florida and she is in California. I know if one of us doesn’t understand something the other one will. And I’m real sure there will be a lot of laughs during this process.
Thank you
I need to know how to (yo.k1) 3 times. It is for a baby blanket. I have struggled with this for several days.
Hello Norma,
A (yo, k1) 3 times is worked like this: yo, k1, yo, k1, yo, k1. This would use up three stitches on the needle.
You might also see a stitch where it says “(yo, k1) 3 times into next stitch.” In that case, you would work yo, k1, yo, k1, yo, k1 all into the same stitch. If that’s the case, you might find this video helpful: https://www.theknittingcircle.com/video/fancy-cast-on-knit-yarnover-knit-kyok-018787/
It doesn’t show that exact configuration of working into the same stitch, but it does work knits and yarn overs into the same stitch. You can then apply what you learn to the baby blanket. Happy Knitting!
Please let us know if you have any further questions

Sarah

I really look forward to learning to knit!
I’m looking forward to this! I love to crochet, but I have wanted to learn how to knot for ages!
Ticket 38142 i have knitted for ages, but the patterns seem to have changed now you knit in the round, where before it was 2 sides one back and two sleeves and you sewed them together and the button band was done with the sides etc. now they are separate and you have to join them by picking up stitches also, doing this for the sleeves etc. I find it hard picking up stitches not sure where I am supposed to get the stitch from. Also, what with this knit into a stitch 9 or 10 times, how on earth are you supposed to do this?
Another question I have is, can you not give a crochet course, I would love to be able to do this, but I cant. So a close up of how do this would be brilliant.
Hi Linda!
Here is what our experts had to say:
We have a sweater video for a specific sweater on our website. You might find the techniques shown in that video helpful. You can find it here: https://www.theknittingcircle.com/video/how-to-knit-a-ruffled-tee-018402/
We have a similar learn to crochet series in the works – it will be available soon!
What should we order to be prepared for the first lesson?
I’m really looking forward to this class. I used to sew and knit a lot when I was in High School in the 70’s, but then I spent most of my time crocheting and doing other crafts like cross stich embroidery. I’m still crocheting, , and I’m learning to quilt, but I’m looking forward to relearning the knitting skills I picked up so easily all those years ago. The only good thing about the pandemic has been having time to do all these crafts, and it’s a good thing to fill my time in retirement! Definitely excited and looking forward to this series!
I want to practice knitting with you!
I can hardly wait for any instructions. I love learning and it’s never too late!

Can I use size 10 straight needles for the Cowl?
Hello Cindi,
Here’s what the experts had to say about your question:
Sure! Your cowl may come out a little bit smaller due to using smaller needles. You can always work a few extra rows at the end, if necessary. You’ll need the cowl to be at least 22-23” or longer length in order to comfortably fit around your neck when complete.
Please let us know if you have any further questions

Ticket 37919 I knit on the round but my tension is all wrong how can I correct it?
Hello Violet!
Our knitting expert would like us to share the following answer:
There are a couple things you can do to try to correct it. You might just simply need to change your needle size when knitting in the round. Some knitters will knit a little different in the round versus flat and that can make your gauge/tension change. You could also try different circular needles (or double-pointed needles) to see if that makes a difference. Sometimes the material of the knitting needle makes a difference!
We have lots of videos on knitting in the round. You might some of them helpful!

I am knitting a vest that is continuous over the shoulder and have to add yarn for one of the front panels. How do I add the yarn for that panel. (I’ve searched but didn’t find a video specifically for this, so perhaps it is contained in another instruction. Can you direct me to it please?
Hello Elizabeth,
Thank you for contacting us.
Are you looking to just join a new ball of yarn? You can simply start knitting with the new ball of yarn. That first stitch might be a little loose, but you can tighten in a bit when you go weave in the end. If it’s something where you need to pick up and knit the front panel, we have a premium video for that here: https://www.theknittingcircle.com/video/picking-up-stitches-along-a-slipped-stitch-heel-018472/
That particular video talks about socks, but the concept will work for any project.

I am left-handed. Do you think I’ll be able to learn from this class?
I learned basic knitting when I was in grade school. I am now 70 years old and have forgotten most of it. I have tried to pick it up again several times. I have trouble reading instructions and understanding some of the terms. I have googled knitting terms at times and not gotten results. I also am interested in knitting socks. I don’t know how to mark rows and change yarn colors. Thank you for any help. I look forward to the class.

I’d like to learn to knit complicated stitches
nice idea
I just started knitting again. I am making a sweater for my friend’s granddaughter who is 8 months. The size will be one year to 18 months. I decided on the 7 hour sweater. Having trouble on row 6. Every other stitch, you knit one and increase one, finishing the row with 51 stitches. Started the sweater with 37 stitches. I am tired of ripping out the first six rows and starting over to get the right count on the stitches.
Hi Susan,
Here is what our expert had to say:
Because the pattern is free on a blog, I was able to find the pattern and read it.
You have 37 stitches on row 5, as you said.
Row 6 says to “increase 1 in next st, K1.” In order for the math to work to 51 stitches, that means you need to do something like “kfb, k1” for that part. Kfb is knit front & back into the same stitch. Basically, just make sure you are increasing 14 stitches on row 6 using whatever increase method you like best!
Let us know if other questions come up!

I want to know how to knit hats
Socks are definitely a nice knitted item, but are a very advanced project to attempt. It involves knitting in the round with double pointed needles, splitting from the round to knit a heel flap with a reinforced stitch, picking up stitches along the side of the heel, and knitting angled gussets along it. It will take some time to work up to socks. :)
I disagree that socks are an advanced project. I was an adventurous beginner and my third project was socks. They can be simple and except for the toe’s Kirchner stitch, fairly straightforward. Use magic loop, 1×1 rib or 2×2 rib for an inch or inch and a half, whatever your preference, then knit in the round using the magic loop for as much leg as you wish, do Fish Lips Kiss heel (paid pattern on Ravelry) and knit to the toe. Finish with Kirchner stitch. All of which is available on YouTube, except for the paid pattern for the heel, but you can find other heel patterns as well. Once you master a basic sock, do 2 at a time (2AAT)! I like Mina’s Two At A Time Socks pattern available on Ravelry.
I want to learn how to knit socks cuff down on circular needles.

I would like to know what the next project will be after the cowl for beginners, the next suggested project, …, etc. Although I think I will not be making the cowl for awhile; and I will need to watch the videos more than once. I would also like to know of easy vest and sweaters that a beginner would knit.
Hi Marianne. We have live instruction events every month, and you can watch the replays on our website. It’s a great place to go after the Learn to Knit Series, because you want watch the videos back as much as you like: https://www.theknittingcircle.com/videos/all-live-events/
We also have a free patterns page, most of the patterns are adventurous beginner and intermediate: https://www.theknittingcircle.com/free-knitting-patterns/
