Knit Through the Back Loop (K1 tbl)

Duration:   2  mins

Description

Once you’ve mastered the knit stitch, you’re ready to learn how to knit through the back loop. In this video, Jen Lucas explains how to knit a stitch through the back loop.

To begin, Jen shows a swatch of twisted ribbing. This ribbing is created by knitting 1 stitch through the back loop and purling 1 stitch through the back loop. She notes that working stitches through their back loops is useful not only for stitch patterns, but several decreases also are worked by knitting through the back loop.

K1tbl = knit 1 stitch through the back loop

To knit a stitch through the back loop, Jen inserts the right needle into the back of the stitch and then knits it. This twists the stitch. She works several stitches this way to see how the k1tbl stitch is constructed.

Hi everyone, I'm Jen Lucas for The Knitting Circle. In this video, let's learn how to knit one through the back loop. Knitting through the back loop is an important skill to know as it's used in lots of different applications in knitting. So let's get started. I'm going to show you how to do a knit one through the back loop. You'll see this in lots of different places in knitting. You'll see it in different stitch patterns. You'll also see it in different decrease stitches that you need to do. Sometimes you'll need to knit two together through the back loop, for example. Here I have a stitch pattern where we used a knit one through the back loop. It's a twisted rib. So it's a knit one through the back loop, and then a purl one through the back loop. So you can see here I have these column of knit stitches here but they're all twisted because I have knit through the back loops. So let's go ahead and take a look at how to do this. It's very easy. So normally when we're knitting, we're coming into the front of the stitch this way to create our knit stitch. Well when we're knitting through the back loop, we're doing just that. We're knitting through the back loop by bringing our right needle around to the back and we're going into the back of the stitch this way. Through the back loop, wrapping the yarn around, pulling a loop through and off. Just like we normally would. So again, we're going around to the back of the needle, we're going through the back of the stitch this way, and knitting the stitch. So instead of going through the front, we're bringing our needle around and going through the back. It's that easy. Just going around to the back and through the back loop. And you can see here where we've created these stitches. They have a little twist in them 'cause we went through the back loop. Wasn't that easy? The directions just tell us what to do. We're gonna knit through the back loop, very simple. I really hope that you enjoyed learning with me today at The Knitting Circle. And I hope that you'll check out all the other great content we have here on our website. I'll see you back here again soon.
