Bobble Cast-on
Mary Beth TempleThe bobble cast-on gives an adorable novelty edge to any project but I especially love it on scarves, shawls, and cropped sweaters for a pop of texture. You can set up with any size bobble you like, and can space them however you like but for this purposes of this video I have 2 stitches at the beginning and end, I am using a 5-stitch bobble, and have 5 plain stitches between the bobbles.
Despite the name, we actually have to cast stitches onto the needle with a plain cast-on before we get to the bobble part! I have used a long-tail cast-on because I like the garter stitch ridge it helps provide between the bobbles.
MB - make bobble - Row 1: (Kfb, kfb, k1) all in same st. (OR K, yo, k, yo, k all in same st - see video!)
Row 2: P5. Row 3: K5. Row 4: P5. Row 5: Put a little pressure on your working yarn on the first sti on the left-hand needle. Pass each of the next 4 sts one at a time over that first stitch, pass that stitch to right-hand needle.
Now for the swatch pattern I used:
Row 1: Cast on 17 sts with long-tail cast-on.
Row 2: K2, MB, *k5, MB).
Rep from * across, k2.
You can then proceed on with your knitting pattern as written, noting the next row you knit will need to be a WS row.
