Quick Tip: Joining Jumbo Yarn with a Lighter
Mary Beth TempleWhen working with Jumbo yarn you can't just weave in a tail when changing colors, ending off or adding a skein - and while there are other methods of joining yarn this is the quickest for an adult to do! Hit the core of both ends of the yarn with a flame, and quickly push the hot ends together while keeping your fingers out of the way. Looking for a less flammable method? Check out this video on joining jumbo yarns with a needle and thread.
Hi there. I am Mary Beth Temple. And I wanna talk to you about joining Jumbo yarn with a lighter. Now, I for one did not believe that this tip worked. And generally speaking, I use a needle and thread to join my Jumbo yarn, but it does work with a few caveats and let me show you how you wanna make sure that you light both sides at the same time.
And I would also suggest in the interest of safety, you be near a sink or a glass of water. Anyway, I'm gonna light both my ends at the same time. I'm going to let them burn for a second. Then I'm going to try and keep them centered and push the two ends together. Now, you do not want to put your fingers right on top of the hot spot.
You will burn your fingers or you could ruin your manicure. Ask me how I know, but I practice these things so you don't have to. So then you're going to really want to put this down and let it cool off. It's not going to be a solid join until it's 100% cool. But at that point, you can tug both sides, make sure you have a good solid join and go on knitting or crocheting your project.
