Quick Tip: Joining Jumbo Yarn with Needle And Thread

Mary Beth Temple
Duration:   1  mins

We all love those giant fluffy yarns, but joining a new color or ball can present a challenge - you can't just leave a long tail and weave it in later or your work will look thick and lumpy. Grab a regular sewing needle and thread - matching is good but not required because the yarn is so thick! - isolate the core of the yarn on the two cut ends you need to join, and sew with a couple of tack stitches right through the middle. You get a barely invisible join for jumbo yarn. To join a smaller size of yarn, check out this video from expert Jen Lucas.

Hi, I'm Mary Beth Temple. And what a wonderful knitting world we live in that. We now have Jumbo Yarn Craft yarn Council of America seven. They're super thick often. They're plush but not always.

But we're presented with a problem. How do we deal with the ends? Because you can't just weave them in the way you would a lighter weight yarn because you're gonna get a big bulky mess. What I like to do is sew them together with a needle and thread. Any old needle and thread of the closest coordinating color you can find you're gonna overlap them by about an inch.

Most of these super Jumbo yarns, these, these big size seven yarns have a core at their center. So this one, for example, even though it's fluffy, there's a cotton cable that runs up the middle of it. So I'm going to just take a couple of quick stitches, making sure to catch that cord in the middle or if it's a different kind of jumbo yarn, there's probably some kind of stuffing or fabric or twisted cable. There's going to be something in the middle of that yarn that holds it all together And then before I finish, I want to tug really hard on both sides to make sure I have a really great joint. I'm gonna end that off and trim it.

And then I have a beautiful color change with no knots.
