Quick Tip: Tightening Your Last Bind-off
Mary Beth TempleHave you ever completed a knitwise bind-off and that last stitch looks a little stretched out and wonky? This one quick trick will help you avoid that in future! Knit your bind-off as usual, and when you get to the very last stitch on your left-hand needle, pass it to the right-hand needle, use the left-hand needle to pick up the strand just behind that stitch and place it on the right-hand needle, pass both of those strands back to the left-hand needle, and knit them together as one. Pass your first stitch on the right-hand needle over the second stitch as usual, cut your yarn and bring it through the last live loop and tug to close. Your stretched-out stitch now looks neat like all the others in the bind-off! For a review of the basic knitwise bind-off, you can check out this clip.
Hi, I'm Mary Beth Temple and I'm here to talk to you about your knitted bind off. A lot of times that last stitch looks kind of elongated. A little floppy. A little weird. I'm gonna show you how to avoid that.
So I'm doing my regular bind off in which I knit each stitch and then pass the first one over the second one. So now I have two stitches remaining. I'm going to bind off the one before the last one like usual. And now for my very last stitch, I'm going to pop it onto the right hand needle and I'm going to look for the strand behind it, using my left hand needle. I'm going to pop it up so that they're together.
And then I'm going to put that on my left hand needle so I can knit the two together. So I'm knitting that last stitch with the strand that was behind it. Now, I'm going to pass my stitch over the other stitch and then I would cut my yarn except I already have and pull it through and tighten it up and voila that last stitch doesn't look all wonky and crazy. And it is right in line with all of your other van off stitches.
