Quick Tip: Yarn Subs by Yardage
Mary Beth TempleIf you find the perfect pattern but the original yarn is not for you, you will have to do some creative yarn substitution. For a project where gauge is critical you can begin with e CYCA number, but within each category from 0 to 7 there is a pretty wide range in sizes. Check out this video to see how to compare yardages within a category to get the closest match to the original that you can!
Hi, I'm Mary Beth Temple and I love to knit and I love to look at old patterns, but sometimes I find a pattern. I wanna make that calls for a yarn that I don't have access to whether it's discontinued a color. I don't like uh out of my budget and maybe it's, it's got a fiber in it. I'm allergic to. So I want to substitute yarn.
The easiest way to do it for contemporary yarns is look for the craft yarn Council number and find something else with the same craft yarn council number. So this says six super bulky. The first thing I'm going to do is look for other yarns that say six super bulky, but just because they have the same craft yarn Council number doesn't mean that all of those yarns are the exact same length and length is relative to thickness. So to get the absolute best match I can get, I'm going to look at the yardage for the original yarn per 100 g and I'm going to look at the yardage for the yarn. I'm thinking about using per 100 g and I'm going to get one that matches the original yarn as close as humanly possible for yardage.
The closer it is, the easier it's going to be for me to make a 1 to 1 substitution.
