Description

To work the Afterthought Heel, you will knit your entire sock from cuff to toe – or vice versa – and decide at a later time where to insert and knit the heel. The Afterthought Heel is a terrific technique to use when you are knitting a very complex stitch or color pattern that you do not want to interrupt, or when you are getting ahead on your sock knitting goals without necessarily knowing which pair of socks is going to which wearer.

When you have decided where your heel wants to go you can pick up the needed stitches – usually about 50% of the stitches of the round – with a double pointed needle. After you have picked up the same columns of stitches two rounds away on a second double pointed needle, you will cut away the round separating the needles. At that point you can separate your stitches to easily knit your heel, which is often a wedge heel with this style of construction.

A variation on the Afterthought Heel is the Peasant Heel, seen in this video.
