Once you’ve mastered the knit stitch, you’re ready to learn how to knit through the back loop. In this video, Jen Lucas explains how to knit a stitch through the back loop.
To begin, Jen shows a swatch of twisted ribbing. This ribbing is created by knitting 1 stitch through the back loop and purling 1 stitch through the back loop. She notes that working stitches through their back loops is useful not only for stitch patterns, but several decreases also are worked by knitting through the back loop.
K1tbl = knit 1 stitch through the back loop
To knit a stitch through the back loop, Jen inserts the right needle into the back of the stitch and then knits it. This twists the stitch. She works several stitches this way to see how the k1tbl stitch is constructed.
