Quick Tip: Estimating Yardage on a Partial Skein
Mary Beth TempleDescription
Hi, I'm Mary Beth Temple and I wanna talk to you about all those leftover skeins in your stash that are not full. We all have partial skeins. So the first thing I'm gonna tell you is don't throw out your ball bands. It's so easy to do to throw them out. And then holy heck, you have no idea what you have left over.
But the other thing you're going to need to know is how much of that partial skein you have left. So I'm going to show you a quick tip if you're working with 100 g skein, which so many of them are. So, I'm going to take this partial skein. I'm gonna take the ball band off and I'm going to weigh it on my kitchen scale in grams. Now, it's telling me that I have 69 g left of my original 100 g skein.
Now, that's not a lot of use because I don't uh estimate my projects in grams, I estimate it in yards. But if you have 100 g skein and you have 69 g left 69/100 you have 69% of 100 g skein. Then all you have to do is whip out your calculator. You're going to look at the ball band and see how many yards you had originally in this case, 100 and 85 and then you're going to whip out your phone or your calculator and you're going to say 100 and 85 times 69%. And it's going to kick back a number which I think was in the neighborhood of 100 and 26.
So now I know give or take, I have 100 and 26 yards left. So when I'm picking a project, I know that's how much of this yarn I have left and maybe I can finally use it up.
