Quick Tip: Sock Heels
Mary Beth TempleWith a little bit of pre-planning, it can be a simple trick to swap out the sock heel written in the pattern you are working on with a different heel that you either prefer to knit, or prefer to wear. If you don't want to plan a heel at all until later- take a look at this video on the Afterthought Heel.
Hi there. I am Mary Beth Temple, Avid sock Knitter and sock designer. And here today to talk to you about the heels of your socks. If you do a traditional heel flap, heel turn and gus it, now none of us want to go into our sock pattern and rewrite the whole thing. But I've discovered especially if you have a narrow heel on your foot like I do on mine that if, instead of doing a plain stock in that heel flap like I did, here you go to one with slip stitches, either this columnar slip stitch heel flap in which we're alternating knit stitches and slip stitches and then just pearling back or the eye of the Partridge heel in which we're alternating slip stitches and knit stitches and pearling back and then alternating the placement on every row two things happen.
One is you have a little bit more cushion cushioning. This fabric is a little denser. It's a little more comfortable to wear, but also it tends to draw in just the least, little bit. It's not like a ribbing, but it draws in the least little bit and fits your heel more comfortably if you have a narrow heel.
