While there are many different ways to work top-down raglan shaping, getting a general understanding of how the math works will help you whether you are following along with a designer pattern, working through a vintage pattern, or designing your own sweater.

In this video instructor Mary Beth Temple will show you the traditional top-down raglan shaping formula of four seams, with an increase on either side of each seam on every other round. The set up for the sample is also a traditional formula - 1/3 of the total stitches used for the front, 1/3 for the back with the beginning of round in the center of that section, and 1/6 for each sleeve, separated by markers. Using the knit front and back increase, you will knit in rounds until your piece is big enough to accommodate the front, the back and both sleeves which means the piece grows very quickly.

After separating the body from the sleeves you can continue on with your knitting! If you would like to try out some raglan math without a big commitment check out these adorable raglan sweater ornaments.
