Description

Stockinette stitch is a classic and versatile knitting fabric known for its smooth, right-side texture and its reverse, garter-stitch-like appearance on the wrong side. While traditionally created by alternating knit rows and purl rows when working flat (back and forth), Stockinette stitch is also commonly worked in the round for seamless projects like hats, sweaters, and more. This tutorial will show you how. When knitting Stockinette stitch flat, you work knit stitches on right-side rows and purl stitches on wrong-side rows. However, when working in the round on circular needles or double-pointed needles (DPNs), the concept of “right side” and “wrong side” changes slightly. Because you’re working in a continuous circle, the right side of your work is always facing you.

The beauty of Stockinette stitch in the round is its simplicity: Every single stitch is a knit stitch! That’s it! No purling required. To begin, cast on the required number of stitches onto your circular needles or DPNs. Carefully join your stitches in the round, being sure not to twist them. This creates the circular shape. Place a stitch marker to mark the beginning of each round. Simply knit every stitch in every round. Continue knitting until your piece reaches the desired length. When you’ve achieved the correct length, bind off your stitches to complete your project.

Knitting Stockinette stitch in the round offers several advantages. It eliminates the need for seams, resulting in a smooth and professional finish. Often, knitting in the round can be faster than working flat, as you don’t have to purl. It’s also incredibly versatile and perfect for a wide range of projects, from garments to accessories. For best results, use stitch markers to clearly mark the beginning of each round, always check your gauge before starting a project to ensure the finished piece will be the correct size, and choose the appropriate needle size for your yarn and project. Hi everyone. I'm Jen Lucas for The Knitting Circle. In this video, let's take a look at working stockinette stitch in the round. Stockinette stitch creates a smooth fabric, and is the knitted fabric that most people think of. When they think of knitting, they're thinking of stockinette stitch.

You might recall from our stockinette stitch in rows video, that when we're working in rows, we're knitting on one side and purling on the other side. Well, when we're working a stockinette stitch in the round, or when we're doing circular knitting, it's even easier. Because we're always looking at the right side of our work, we're just knitting all the stitches every round. So let's go ahead and take a look at stockinette stitch in the round. When working stockinette stitch flat, we're knitting our stitches on the right side and we're purling them on the wrong side.

So here is our right side, and you can see we have this nice smooth fabric. And that is what stockinette stitch is. It's this nice, smooth fabric that we create on the right side of our work. So when we're working in the round though, and doing our circular knitting, we always are on the right side of our work. We're always having the right side facing because we're circular knitting.

So here you can see I have my swatch that's in the round, and you can see I have still my nice smooth fabric on the right side or public side. And on the inside, I have my purl bumps, which is the wrong side. So we're gonna go ahead and work stockinette stitch in a round. And since the right side or public side is always facing, all we have to do is just knit every stitch. So here I've started some stockinette stitch in the round already, and I've worked a few rounds.

So I have my marker here that would mark the beginning of my round. And all I'm gonna do is just knit every stitch. I'm now coming to the last few stitches of my round. Here's my last stitch. Here's my marker.

I'm just gonna slip my marker to the right hand needle here. And then, because I'm working in the round, I'm still on the right side of my work. So my next round of stockinette stitch in the round, is just knitting all the stitches again. It's that easy. You're just knitting around and around and around and around.

And that's stockinette stitch in the round. And there you go. You can see just how easy it is. You're just knitting and knitting and knitting and knitting, and you're creating some beautiful stockinette stitch in the round. You can use it for hats, socks, sweaters, baby garments.

Just about anything that you would knit in the round, stockinette is perfect for that. I'm Jen Lucas for The Knitting Circle. I hope that you enjoyed this video. And be sure to check out all the other great knitting videos that we have here on our website.
